Fr Ed's eNews: Preparing for Lent
It's hard to believe that we are about to start the Penitential Season of Lent when it is so sunny and warm. I'm writing this on Friday afternoon, but by the time you read this, the the weather may have changed. Lent is indeed upon us. Usually I go kicking and screaming in protest as the desert of Lent unfolds before me. I know that Lent holds many gifts and graces; and that God is
with me, but I'd rather stay in the comfort zone of where I am than venture out into the wilderness of the unknown. How about you? Do you ever feel that way?
The consolation for me is that while we go into Lent alone, we go together. We are all on the same journey and we can support each other as we move and are moved into the places where the Spirit of God leads us. Lent is a journey of surrender. It all starts with ashes. Ashes are the symbolic acknowledgement that everything but love will fall away and die. That gives me the courage to begin. Shall we walk in hope and trust together?

A Prayer in Preparation for Lent
Gracious God, as we enter this period of inner reflection and examination, the days stretch before me and invite me inward to that silent, holy space that holds your Spirit. This special time beckons me to see my life through Christ's eyes and the truth and reality of your love incarnate. Give me the grace to enter the space of these days with anticipation of our meeting. And, when I open my soul to your presence, let your loving kindness flow over me and seep into the pockets of my heart. I ask this for the sake of your love.

What does God want to give us?
Often, we approach Lent concentrating on what we are going to do -- or what we are going to give up. What would happen if instead, we focus on what God wants to give us? What would happen if we slow down...make time to really listen to God?
